Byline ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application, browser extension, and website (collectively, the "Service").

Information We Collect

Account Information

When you create an account, we collect:

  • Email address – Used for authentication, account recovery, and important service communications
  • Authentication data – If you sign in with Google, we receive your email and basic profile information from Google

Article Data

When you save articles to Byline, we collect and store:

  • Article URLs – The web addresses of articles you save
  • Article content – The text, title, author, publication name, and publication date extracted from saved articles
  • Site icons – Favicon URLs from the websites you save from
  • Your interactions – Whether you've favorited, archived, or read an article

Usage Data

We automatically collect certain information when you use the Service:

  • Device information – Device type, operating system version
  • App usage – Features used, timestamps of activity (for sync purposes)

Browser Extension

Our Chrome extension:

  • Only activates when you explicitly click to save an article
  • Reads the current page content to extract the article text
  • Does not track your browsing history
  • Does not collect data from pages you don't save
  • Does not run in the background or monitor your activity

How We Use Your Information

We use the collected information to:

  • Provide the Service – Store and sync your saved articles across devices
  • Authenticate you – Verify your identity and secure your account
  • Improve the Service – Understand how features are used to make improvements
  • Communicate with you – Send important updates about the Service (no marketing emails without consent)

Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored securely using Supabase, a trusted cloud infrastructure provider. We implement:

  • Encryption in transit – All data is transmitted over HTTPS/TLS
  • Encryption at rest – Data is encrypted on Supabase servers
  • Row-level security – Database policies ensure you can only access your own data
  • Secure authentication – Passwords are hashed; OAuth tokens are securely managed

Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services:

  • Supabase – Database hosting, authentication, and backend services (Privacy Policy)
  • Google OAuth – Optional sign-in method (Privacy Policy)
  • AWS Polly – Text-to-speech for premium audio features (Privacy Policy)
  • PostHog – Privacy-focused product analytics to understand feature usage; no personal data is shared (Privacy Policy)

We do not sell your data to third parties or use it for advertising.

Data Retention

We retain different types of data for different periods:

  • Account and article data – Retained while your account is active
  • Analytics data – Aggregated usage statistics retained for up to 24 months
  • Server logs – Automatically deleted after 90 days

When you delete your account:

  • Your articles and personal data are permanently deleted within 30 days
  • Anonymized, aggregated analytics data may be retained

Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access – Request a copy of your personal data
  • Correction – Update or correct your information
  • Deletion – Delete your account and all associated data
  • Export – Export your saved articles
  • Withdraw consent – Opt out of optional data collection

Children's Privacy

Byline is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected such information, please contact us immediately.

International Data Transfers

Your data may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your own. We ensure appropriate safeguards are in place to protect your data in accordance with this Privacy Policy.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by:

  • Posting the new policy on this page with an updated date
  • Sending an email notification for material changes
